VW’s Scout EV SUV and Pickup Are American Made and Will Be Sold Direct to Consumer

In a blast from the past, the iconic Scout nameplate returns with a modern twist. Many of us recall the original Scout which was produced by International Harvester from 1961-1980. It was considered the world’s first utility vehicle that mixed on-road driving with off-road fun.

Scout Motors, a Volkswagen brand, has unveiled two rugged EVs that pay homage to the original Scout’s adventurous spirit while embracing cutting-edge technology. Volkswagen also recently invested in Rivian and many are saying there are similarities between the brands.

Two years in the making, the day has finally come to share the next generation of Scout vehicles with the world,” said Scott Keogh, President and CEO, Scout Motors. “The original core idea — rugged, versatile vehicles capable of off-road adventure and family duty — is more relevant than ever. We couldn’t be prouder to revitalize this iconic American brand, create thousands of American jobs, and put American ingenuity back to work.

Meet the Terra pickup and Traveler SUV – two distinctly American vehicles designed in Michigan and built in South Carolina. Both models feature thoughtful design elements that echo the classic Scout, including rounded contours, upward-sweeping windows, and separate bumpers.

But make no mistake – these are thoroughly modern machines.

Terra: The Electric Workhorse

The Terra pickup is built for serious work and play. Its 5.5-foot bed comes equipped with both 120V and 240V outlets for power tools.

With a massive 10,000-pound towing capacity and 2,000-pound payload rating, it’s ready for heavy hauling. The truck bed features practical touches like integrated power outlets for tools and compressors.

Traveler: The Adventure-Ready SUV

The Traveler SUV brings versatility with its innovative roof options. Choose between a folding Cabana top for open-air driving or a glass roof with powered shade.

It can tow up to 7,000 pounds and matches the Terra’s 2,000-pound payload capacity. The split tailgate adds practicality for various outdoor activities.

Imagine buying a car with no need for a trip to the car dealer! That is the plan for Scout Motors.

Starting under $60,000 before incentives, both models will be sold directly to consumers through dedicated “Scout Workshop” locations. Scout Motors wants to create a one-to-one customer relationship by having all interactions happen directly through Scout Motors.

Worries about repairs without a dealership nearby? Scout has a national collision partner network ready and notes that roughly 80% of all repairs can be done in your driveway.

Production begins in 2027, with reservations now open for a $100 refundable deposit.

The new Scout models honor their heritage while blazing a trail into an electric future. With robust capabilities, thoughtful design, and cutting-edge technology, they’re poised to shake up the electric off-road segment.
